Make your voice heard in local, state and national elections

You have the right to make your voice heard through local, state and national elections. In partnership with the and the Broome County Board of Elections, the Center for Civic Engagement’s nonpartisan voting program is committed to helping students be engaged and informed voters. Stop by the CCE in UU-137 for help registering to vote or requesting an absentee ballot, to drop off your completed form or to ask questions about voting or registering to vote.

You have a choice!

You can register at your home address (typically a parent's address) or at your on-campus or off-campus address. Students who register at home will need to request an absentee ballot if they cannot return home to vote. If you register with your on-campus address, you will vote in the University Union for general elections. Off-campus students will vote at a polling site near their residence. 

Out-of-state students can register using their Broome County address. Registering locally will not impact your residency status for tuition purposes or impact your federal financial aid. In rare cases, certain scholarships could be impacted by changing your voter registration (for example, a scholarship based on your home-state residency that uses voter registration as part of a residency determination).

You must be 18 in order to vote, but if you are 16 or 17 you can submit your voter registration form and it will become active once you turn 18.

You can change your registration at any time by filling out a new voter registration form (note Important Dates and Deadlines listed below). You can only be registered in one location. Completing a new voter registration form will update your voter registration address. Not sure if you're registered?

Voter registration records are one of several ways that individuals may be identified for jury duty. Students should respond promptly to any jury summons and provide the required information if they are unable to serve.

Important dates and deadlines for New York Elections

November 4 General Election: Polls Open 6a.m.-9p.m.

October 17	Last day the CCE will accept out-of-county NY voter registration forms
October 24	Last day the CCE will accept Broome County voter registration forms
October 25	Last day for your board of elections to receive voter registration
October 25	Last day for your board of elections to receive early mail or absentee ballot application by mail or through the early mail or absentee ballot request portal
October 25 - November 2	Early Voting
November 3	Last day to apply in-person for a mail ballot
November 4	Election Day
November 4	Last day to postmark mail ballots or deliver ballot in-person to the local board of elections or to any poll site in your county Note: You cannot drop off an absentee ballot from another county at the campus polling place or any other polling place in Broome County.
