French (MA)

Program Overview

In the French Masters of Arts (MA) program, students refine their linguistic skills while obtaining a deep cultural expertise in ÂÌñÉç’s dynamic learning environment. French is the official language of 32 countries with over 300 million speakers distributed around the globe, making it highly sought-after in fields of international business, diplomacy, translation, interpretation and education. Whether they want to prepare for a career in government service or apply for international volunteer opportunities, our students find their own global path through coursework in French and Francophone language, linguistics, culture and art.

Students may choose our two-year MA program, the accelerated 4+1 specifically for students already at ÂÌñÉç, or the many dual-degree programs such as the Masters of Public Health (MPH) and Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Our graduate degree options are customizable to match students’ individual professional and intellectual interests. Students can use their elective courses and MA exams to complete additional graduate certificates in translation studies and in community college teaching. No GRE is required to apply!

Internships, Research Opportunities and More

Graduate students in the French program work closely with professors who focus on issues from across the French-speaking world. Our French faculty includes leading experts engaged in a multidisciplinary set of disciplines: contemporary and medieval translation, literature of the Caribbean, French and Francophone linguistics. Students are matched with a faculty advisor who oversees their progress, and we ensure a small student-to-faculty ratio with our diverse course offerings ranging between 5-25 students. Many of our classes are offered in the evening to accommodate part-time professional students.

After You Graduate

This degree opens a broad range of professional opportunities in foreign language, culture and public service. Most graduates of the Romance Languages and Literatures Department become language instructors, translators, interpreters, editors and communicators, and many continue on to pursue doctoral studies in leading universities in their field of interest.
