Spanish (MA)

Program Overview

Students in the Masters of Arts (MA) program in The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures enhance their profile through the mastery of linguistic and cultural knowledge associated with the growing Spanish-speaking world. With over 500 million speakers globally, Spanish is the world’s fourth-most spoken language and the third-most used on the internet. The number of Spanish speakers projects to increase exponentially over the next 25 years. As a result, Spanish-language proficiency is becoming even more highly regarded by employers across professional and academic fields. From business to tech, medicine to government, education to entrepreneurship, the value of matching linguistic aptitude with cultural fluency cannot be overstated.

Whether they choose our two-year MA program, the accelerated/4+1 designed specifically for students already at ÂÌñÉç, or the many dual-degree programs such as a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) and Masters in Social work (MSW), our graduate degree options are customizable to match students’ individual professional and intellectual interests. Students can use their elective courses and MA exams to complete additional graduate certificates in translation studies and in community college teaching. No GRE is required to apply!

Internships, Research Opportunities and More

Graduate students in the Spanish program take nine interdisciplinary courses with experts from across the Spanish-speaking world. The Spanish faculty includes professors from the U.S., Spain, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, and other countries who focus on a broad assortment of multidisciplinary studies: detective fiction and memory studies in Latin America, Chicano and Latino communities in the U.S., Spanish language and linguistics, gothic Caribbean literature, and contemporary poetry and metafictional literature in Spain. Students are matched with a faculty advisor who oversees their progress, and we ensure a small student-to-faculty ratio with our diverse course offerings ranging between 5-25 students. Many of our classes are offered in the evening to accommodate part-time professional students.
